Donna Trope upholds no sacred cow; no subject is off-limits.

Her photographs, in their simultaneous employment and exposure of artifice, enact a kind of double-speak which is reflected at the level of their ideological content. They interrogate the things they appear initially to glorify — artificiality, hyper-femininity, cosmetic surgery, eroticism and seduction — without suggesting mutual exclusion or supremacy of either position. They remain an exploration of how identity is constructed and performed, never entering territory which is judgemental, damning or tyrannical.

She has lifted beauty photography into the realm of art, transforming and thus elevating the genre with an injection of the visceral, the psychological, the uncanny and the confrontational: elements which constituted its subversion and would become the hallmarks of her instantly recognisable visual language.
