A Frances Waite is an instance of high theatre, and the first curtain lifted is the one exposing her. Her work’s voyeuristic flavour can easily be misread, but this voyeurism is self-reflexive. It refers to the artist’s experience of herself as surveilled, her sense of inhabiting a panopticon, growing up as she did alongside social media. She is preoccupied with what she calls “the bedside table”, the banality of everyday domestic reality, and takes an author’s approach to image-making: creating a scene, placing her characters inside it, and instigating a dynamic. In this way her drawing has something in common with her stage design practice, the two allowing her to work along the full spectrum of scale.

In other words, Frances Waite is a multidisciplinary artist working across drawing, stage design, and whatever else takes her interest.
